Slope Calculator

Convert rise and run into slope percent, angle in degrees and the 1-in-X ratio — for ramps, driveways, drainage falls and roofs.

Rise and run

Use the same unit for both — inches over inches, feet over feet, meters over meters. Slope is a ratio, so the units cancel.

Three ways to say the same slope

Slope is one idea wearing three costumes. Percent is rise over run times 100 — the language of roads and drainage. Degrees is the angle from horizontal — the language of ramps and machinery. The ratio, written 1 in X, says how far you travel horizontally for one unit of climb — the language of accessibility standards and plumbing falls.

Slope % = rise ÷ run × 100  ·  Angle = arctan(rise ÷ run)  ·  Ratio = 1 in (run ÷ rise)
Example: a pipe run that rises 3 in over 12 in is a 25% slope, at 14.04 degrees, a ratio of 1 in 4 — steep for a pipe, which is the sort of thing this conversion exists to catch.

Slopes you will meet

UseTypical slope
Drainage pipe fall (minimum)2% — 1/4 in per ft (1 in 48)
Patio / paving fall away from a house1.5–2% (1 in 50–65)
Wheelchair ramp (maximum, US ADA)8.33% — 1 in 12
Driveway (comfortable maximum)12–15%
6/12 roof pitch50% — 26.57 degrees

Percent and degrees are not interchangeable, and confusing them is the classic slope error: a 100% slope is 45 degrees, not vertical, and a 10% grade is a gentle 5.7 degrees despite sounding dramatic. This converter is deliberately nothing but the conversion, done exactly — for roof work the companion roof pitch calculator adds rafter lengths and slope factors.

Frequently asked questions

Why is there no waste allowance or shopping list?

Because nothing is bought from a slope. It is a measurement conversion, like the roof pitch tool — the number itself is the whole answer, and dressing it up as a purchase would be inventing precision that is not there.

What slope do I need for a French drain or sewer line?

The common minimum is 1/4 inch of fall per foot of run — that is 2%, a ratio of 1 in 48. Flatter and solids settle; much steeper and water outruns the solids it should carry.

How do I measure rise and run on site?

Run is the horizontal distance (a level line), rise is the vertical difference between its ends. A long level or a laser, a tape and this conversion will grade a patio or a drain run more honestly than any eyeball.

Is a 45-degree slope 100% or 45%?

100%. Percent is a ratio, not a share of a right angle: at 45 degrees the rise equals the run, which is 100% by definition. Vertical would be infinite percent — one reason degrees exist.
