Square Meters Calculator
Measure a length and width in meters, centimeters, feet or inches and get the area in square meters first — with square feet and square yards alongside.
The area, stated the metric way first
Most of the world's flooring, tile and paint is specced in square meters, and metric plans are drawn in them — but North American rooms are often taped in feet. This calculator takes the length and width in meters, centimeters, feet or inches and leads with the square meters, keeping square feet and square yards beside it for the suppliers who still think in those.
Area in sq meters = area in sq ft × 0.0929 · 1 sq meter = 10.764 sq ft = 1.196 sq yd
Example: a room 4 × 5 meters is 20 sq meters — 215.28 sq ft, 23.92 sq yd. The same room measured in feet (about 13.1 × 16.4 ft) returns the same three numbers.
Why the conversion is not ÷ 10
A meter is about 3.28 feet, but a square meter is 3.28 × 3.28 ≈ 10.76 square feet — areas square the conversion factor. Dividing square feet by 10 for a rough square-meter figure is a passable estimate (about 7% low); dividing by 3.28 is a serious under-order. When a metric supplier's coverage is printed per square meter, that difference is a box of tile you do not have on the last wall.
If the room is metric on the drawings, measure in meters and skip conversion entirely — every conversion is a chance to slip a decimal. The site-wide Imperial / Metric switch at the top sets which unit family the fields offer first, and this page's spelling follows it too.
Frequently asked questions
How many square feet are in a square meter?
10.764 — call it 10.76. A 20 sq meter room is about 215 sq ft. Going the other way, divide square feet by 10.764 (or multiply by 0.0929) to get square meters.
How do I measure a room that is not rectangular?
Split it into rectangles (and the odd triangle), convert each piece, and add — the area calculator handles rectangles, circles, triangles, trapezoids and L-shapes directly, in both unit systems.
Is a square meter the same as a meter squared on a plan?
Yes — 'square meters', 'sq m', 'm²' and 'meters squared' are the same unit. What it is not is a 'meter square' tile count: a floor of 1 × 1 meter tiles needs one tile per square meter only if the tiles are exactly a meter each way.
Why does this page spell it 'metres' sometimes?
The site's spelling follows your unit system: with Metric selected, British spelling (metres, litres) is used, matching the UK, Australia and New Zealand; with Imperial, US spelling (meters, liters). Use the switch at the top of the page to change it.
